The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), in its first meeting following the Delhi Assembly elections, laid out an ambitious roadmap for urban development, including a 100 percent transition to solar energy by 2026.

During a press conference after the meeting, NDMC Vice Chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal announced that the council is set to launch a solar energy subsidy scheme to encourage residents and commercial establishments to install rooftop solar panels. In addition to central government subsidies, NDMC will provide matching incentives, making the transition to green energy more accessible.

"In the coming days, solar panels will be installed on every rooftop in the NDMC area, with a final decision expected in the next council meeting. The goal is to make NDMC self-sustainable by 2026," Chahal stated.

NDMC's renewable energy push is expected to lower electricity costs, reduce carbon emissions, and set a model for urban sustainability. Additionally, the council is working to procure electricity at lower costs, ensuring affordable power for residents.

Alongside solar initiatives, NDMC is implementing urban improvement measures, including rainwater harvesting, expansion of night-sweeping programs, and a monsoon preparedness plan to tackle waterlogging. It also aims to install 9,000 new water connections in underserved areas and expand CCTV surveillance for enhanced security.

The council meeting also saw the induction of newly elected NDMC members, strengthening governance for improved implementation of civic projects. NDMC remains committed to positioning New Delhi as a leader in green energy adoption and urban sustainability.
