The Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power, R.K. Singh, in a written reply to a question, in Lok Sabha has informed about the successful commissioning of 1.44 GW of wind-solar hybrid capacity, marking a milestone in the promotion of renewable energy infrastructure in India.

The achievement comes in the wake of the implementation of the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy, which was issued on May 14, 2018, with the primary objective of fostering the development of large grid-connected wind-solar PV hybrid systems. The policy framework aims to optimize the utilization of wind and solar resources, enhance transmission infrastructure efficiency, and utilize land effectively. Additionally, it seeks to promote innovative technologies and methods that integrate the operations of wind and solar PV plants.

Key features of the National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy include the integration of wind turbines and solar PV systems based on the characteristics of the resources and the recognition of a plant as a hybrid if the rated power capacity of one resource is at least 25 percent of the rated power capacity of the other. It also includes a conditional allowance for existing wind or solar power projects to install solar PV plants or wind turbine generators (WTGs) to benefit from hybrid projects and provision for battery storage to reduce power variability, enhance energy output, and ensure firm power availability.

Renewable Energy Implementing Agencies (REIAs) such as the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd. (SECI), NTPC Ltd., SJVN Ltd., and NHPC Ltd. have issued tenders for various hybrid projects, including Solar-Wind Hybrid Projects and projects with assured supply during peak hours and round-the-clock renewable power.

The successful commissioning of 1.44 GW of hybrid projects underscores the effectiveness of the policy in driving renewable energy adoption and achieving significant milestones in India's renewable energy journey.
