The Director General of Shipping, Shyam Jagannathan, announced the launch of the National Action Plan for Green Shipping, a comprehensive strategy aimed at promoting environmentally friendly practices and providing incentives for low-emission ships in India.
Speaking at the 13th edition of the INMEX SMM India 2023 conference, Jagannathan highlighted the maritime sector's commitment to a prosperous and environmentally responsible future.
Jagannathan also said that the sector’s vision encompasses quadrupling port capacity, clean energy fuel hubs, and cruise tourism growth, among others.
The three-day conference, organized in collaboration with Hamburg Messe und Congress, a German exhibition organizer, will delve into key industry issues, including green shipping and digitalization.
"The National Action Plan for Green Shipping promotes eco-friendly practices and incentives for low-emission ships, positioning India's maritime sector for a prosperous and environmentally responsible future," stated Jagannathan during his keynote address. He emphasized recent achievements in the sector, such as doubling major ports' capacity, expanding waterway networks, increased cruise tourism, and a growing seafarer workforce, alongside progress in solar power adoption and lighthouse tourism.
Jagannathan attributed this positive transformation to initiatives like Sagarmala and digitization efforts, emphasizing sustainability as reflected in the Swachh Sagar Portal for environmental data. The sector's overarching vision also includes leadership in shipbuilding and recycling and the creation of a 5,000 km regional waterway grid.
