All municipal corporations in Uttar Pradesh will develop solar cities to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental conservation, said Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) conference at Gorakhpur.
Reaffirming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, Adityanath emphasised the need for public participation in environmental initiatives. He highlighted Uttar Pradesh’s achievement in replacing 17 lakh halogen streetlights with LED alternatives, leading to energy savings worth INR 1,000 crore.
He further reiterated that the state government has banned single-use plastics while promoting eco-friendly alternatives, including a Lakhimpur-based facility producing biodegradable products from banana fibre. Additionally, UP has planted over 210 crore trees in the past eight years, increasing forest cover despite rapid industrialisation.
On the renewable energy front, the CM noted that Ayodhya has been developed as the state’s first solar city, with similar plans underway for Bundelkhand. The government is also prioritising compressed biogas and ethanol production from agricultural waste, with a bio-CNG plant already operational in Gorakhpur.
