The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has established a Mission Directorate to spearhead the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, aimed at providing free electricity through rooftop solar plants to one crore households. This initiative, approved by the Government of India on February 29, 2024, boasts a significant financial allocation of INR 75,021 crore.
The National Programme Implementation Agency (NPIA) for the program will be operating under the directions of the mission directorate. The administrative green light for the scheme, granted on March 16, 2024, underscores the government's commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
Heading the Mission Directorate will be a Mission Director, concurrently serving as a Joint Secretary to the Government of India and overseeing the Rooftop Solar Division. The Rooftop Solar Division, functioning as the Mission Directorate, will provide vital assistance to the Mission Director.
The Mission Directorate has been tasked with several key responsibilities, including issuing scheme guidelines and amendments, coordinating with all stakeholders, issuing directives to relevant agencies, facilitating financial disbursements, organizing awareness campaigns, liaising with regulatory bodies, and conducting monitoring and evaluation studies periodically. This concerted effort aims to ensure the effective and timely realization of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana's objectives.
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana marks a pivotal stride toward elevating the nation's solar energy capacity, aligning with its ambitious solar targets. As of December 2023, India achieved a rooftop solar capacity of 10.5 GW, showcasing significant progress. With over 25 crore households nationwide capable of accommodating over 600 GW of rooftop solar capacity, the potential for solar energy deployment is vast.
The government's proactive stance on promoting rooftop solar has spurred remarkable growth in the country's solar infrastructure. States such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Kerala have emerged as frontrunners in driving rooftop solar momentum, underscoring the collective effort to harness solar power for sustainable development.
