The Mizoram government is rolling out a scheme under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) in the state promoting subsidised rooftop solar systems for residential homes, announced Mizoram’s Power and Electricity Minister F. Rodingliana at a press conference in Aizawl.

With installation costs set at INR 1.2 lakh per kW within AMC areas and INR 1.8 lakh per kW outside, residents can avail of loans from approved banks. Mizoram has empanelled 12 approved vendors to handle installations and maintenance for five years.

Rodingliana shared that 2,990 households have registered for the scheme, with 557 applications already approved. These measures aim to modernise Mizoram’s power infrastructure, reduce costs, and encourage sustainable energy practices.

Further, he also announced that the government will implement prepaid electricity meters state-wide, with recharge options starting INR 100.

“The prepaid system will let consumers pay only for what they use, ensuring transparency and preventing excessive billing. Unused balances will carry over to the next month, and minimum recharges begin at INR 100,” he said.

The initiative involves installing 2,92,081 meters, including 2,89,383 consumer meters, to improve monitoring and curb power theft. Smart meters will replace manual readings at no extra cost, aligning with central government regulations.

Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), cables across Aizawl, including the Bawngkawn-Kulikawn stretch under the Smart City project, will be replaced to boost efficiency and reduce outages.
