Singapore-based Mercantile & Maritime Group, dealing in energy, logistics, and oil and gas trading, has announced a significant expansion of its MENA Terminals facility in Fujairah, UAE, to establish a cutting-edge AED 2.2 billion biofuel processing plant. This move aligns with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 strategy, advancing its commitment to green energy and sustainable growth.

The new facility will add over 1 million square feet to MENA Terminals, with operations set to commence by 2026. Once completed, the plant will produce up to 150 million liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) annually—accounting for nearly 10 percent of the current global SAF production. This move enhances the UAE’s efforts to minimise carbon emissions and strengthens its position as a major player in low-carbon aviation fuel.

Mercantile & Maritime Group’s CEO, Murtaza Lakhani, expressed his enthusiasm, saying,  “This expansion represents a key advancement for our company and the UAE’s sustainability ambitions. We extend our deepest gratitude to the UAE’s leadership and Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah, whose support has been crucial. Fujairah’s location and forward-thinking leadership make it an ideal hub for this groundbreaking biofuel plant, which will be the largest in the Middle East.”

The SAF plant will not only enhance the UAE’s energy security by reducing dependence on imported fuel but will also leverage the UAE’s rail infrastructure to distribute SAF efficiently. The facility will integrate advanced AI to optimize its operations, aligning with the highest international standards, including those from IATA, CORSIA, and RED III.

By investing in SAF production, Mercantile & Maritime Group reinforces its dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable innovation in the energy sector, contributing to a more sustainable future for the UAE and the broader MENA region.
