In response to the petition filed by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), raising the tariff for commercial and industrial consumers for FY 2024 has been approved by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). The tariff rate for HT I (A) general connections and HT I (B) seasonal connections used by industries for FY24 is INR 8.12 and INR 8.43 respectively.
Meanwhile, the tariff rate for the current year for HT II connections used by commercial establishments is INR 12.83. The revised tariffs will be effective from April 1, 2023.
Apparently, the Commission balanced consumer interest with the recovery of legitimate expenses of the distribution licensee and determined the net revenue gap to be recovered over the balance period of the fourth control period. The overall average tariff hike for FY24 and FY25 happens to be 2.9 percent and 5.6 percent respectively.

MSEDCL estimated the total revenue gap of INR 676.43 billion whereas the Commission has determined a revenue gap of INR 395.67 billion which will be recovered through a revision in tariff.
The reasons for this revenue gap include an increase in fuel cost due to variations on account of imported fuel costs, the impact of claims due to changes in law and taxes and a shortfall in the availability of renewable power among others.
