The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has joined forces with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) to accelerate the State’s energy transition through a new Statement of Intent (SoI).
As per the statement, the collaboration aims to drive the integration of renewable energy into Maharashtra's grid, promote inclusive development, and ensure universal access to sustainable energy. The partnership focusses on developing innovative regulatory and policy solutions that will pave the way for a low-carbon future while ensuring equitable energy access for all.
It may be noted that NITI Aayog and GEAPP had already partnered on similar initiatives at the national level, furthering the impact of transformative actions. This new collaboration at the state level builds on that foundation, with a focus on regulatory innovation to support the integration of renewable energy and improve grid stability across Maharashtra. MERC, known for its leadership in regulatory reforms, has recently introduced key measures such as Resource Adequacy and Demand Flexibility regulations, designed to enhance grid operations and facilitate the integration of renewable sources like solar and wind.
GEAPP, with its focus on accelerating the transition to renewable energy, aims to support Maharashtra’s renewable energy infrastructure by strengthening energy grids and encouraging the adoption of cost-effective, sustainable energy sources. The organisation works to create the necessary conditions for a resilient and sustainable energy future by enhancing capacity, fostering technological innovation, and supporting the development of scalable business models.
Through this collaboration, MERC and GEAPP will establish a platform for regulatory innovation, addressing critical issues such as grid management, renewable energy integration, demand flexibility, energy efficiency, and tariff rationalization. The partnership aims to develop State-specific solutions that balance international best practices with the unique requirements of Maharashtra’s evolving energy needs.
MERC’s Chairperson, Sanjay Kumar, emphasised the significance of the collaboration, stating, “This partnership with GEAPP will provide fresh perspectives on Maharashtra’s electricity network, integrating international best practices while tailoring solutions to meet the state’s specific requirements.”
Saurabh Kumar, Vice President, India, GEAPP, lauded MERC’s leadership in regulatory reforms and said, “With MERC’s progressive leadership in introducing demand flexibility, Maharashtra is setting a benchmark for energy transition at the state level. GEAPP is excited to build on this momentum and offer targeted support to create solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and consumer-centric. Together, we are shaping an equitable, resilient energy future that is prepared to seize tomorrow’s opportunities.”
The collaboration between MERC and GEAPP is a major step towards building a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive energy system for Maharashtra, serving as a model for other States in India to follow as they work to achieve their energy transition goals.
