MMG Group, the owner of McDonald's restaurants in North and East India, has installed a solar plant of 3.2 MW capacity with an investment of INR 14 crore.

The plant will apparently reduce 3,822 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually which is equivalent to planting more than one lakh trees. With this initiative, the company aims to increase the use of renewable energy and diminish its carbon footprint.

Located in Delhi’s Najafgarh area, the solar plant is touted to be the largest in the city. Talking about the development, Sanjeev Agrawal, Chairman of MMG Group said, "We are stepping up our sustainability efforts with the installation of Delhi's BRPL (BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd.) largest solar power plant which has already enabled 24 percent of our Delhi restaurants running on solar energy." He added that the project marks the beginning of its green journey, supporting the country's commitment to reducing emissions intensity and becoming a net zero nation.

Apart from this, McDonald's India North and East is undertaking other revolutionary initiatives to drive sustainability in its supply chain processes such as using FSC-certified paper-based packaging at its stores.

Responsible sourcing of ingredients is another way McDonald’s India – North and East is contributing to nature-positive supply chains. Apparently, the used cooking oil is repurposed into biodiesel, which is known to have lower carbon emissions than conventional fuel.

The company has joined forces with FSSAI-approved vendors to facilitate the collection and conversion of used cooking oil into biodiesel, which is used in trucks, furnaces, boilers etc.

Earlier this year, Westlife Foodworld Ltd., owner of McDonald's restaurants in West and South India, announced that it would progressively install rooftop solar panels on one-third of its new restaurants in FY24.
