On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Day, Marico Ltd., an FMCG company in India, announced that 67.4 percent of its operational energy requirements are now met through renewable sources.
One of the key highlights of FY24 was Marico’s near-complete transition to bio-based briquettes, which now account for over 90 percent of its thermal energy needs. This move represents a significant step towards the company’s broader goal of eliminating fossil fuel dependency and adopting eco-friendly energy alternatives.
As per the firm, under its Sustainability Vision 2030, it aims to achieve net-zero operational emissions in India by 2030 and in global operations by 2040. The company has already made significant progress in this direction, achieving a 79 percent reduction in direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) compared to its FY13 baseline. Additionally, Marico has reduced energy intensity by 71 percent during the same period.
All of Marico’s manufacturing facilities are now entirely coal-free, emphasising its commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources. The Perundurai facility in Tamil Nadu stands out as a key achievement, having been certified as carbon-neutral for the fourth consecutive year. Operating almost entirely on renewable energy, the facility is equipped with smart energy systems to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions. Energy-saving innovations, such as improvements to expellers, cookers, and conveying equipment, along with the adoption of bio-briquettes, have helped the company surpass its emission reduction targets.
The Sanand unit in Gujarat has also made remarkable progress, increasing its share of renewable energy by 2.8 times in FY24. This facility now ranks among Marico’s most advanced manufacturing setups, further solidifying its leadership in sustainable operations.
Speaking on these milestones, Amit Bhasin, Chief Legal Officer, Group General Counsel, and Secretary of the CSR Committee at Marico Ltd., highlighted the company’s deep-rooted commitment to environmental stewardship. “Since our inception, we have regarded environmental responsibility as a core value. Early initiatives such as transitioning to coal-free operations and introducing agro-fuel-based boilers set the foundation for our current advancements. Today, we are proud to operate 100 percent coal-free facilities and achieve milestones like the first carbon-neutral plant certification and the installation of our inaugural solar facility,” he said.
Bhasin further emphasised Marico’s commitment to minimising its environmental footprint across the value chain, from sourcing to production and distribution. “We are constantly innovating to improve energy efficiency and integrate renewable energy across our operations. By embedding environmental responsibility into every aspect of our business, we aim to create a sustainable roadmap for a healthier planet,” he added.
As per the firm, Marico’s Sustainability Vision 2030 outlines eight strategic themes, including Climate Change, Water Stewardship, Circular Economy, Responsible Sourcing, Purposeful Brands, Diversity and Inclusion, Sustainable Agriculture, and Corporate Governance. Guided by this framework, the company continues to implement initiatives across its global operations, setting benchmarks for sustainability in the FMCG sector.
With a dedicated central energy management cell and a focus on deploying low-carbon technologies, Marico aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions in India by 93 percent by 2030, offsetting the remaining 7 percent through carbon sequestration and offsets.
