The Maharashtra government aims to produce 7000 MW of solar power by 2026. The power generated would be used to provide uninterrupted electricity to farmers during the daytime. With this initiative, the burden of cross-subsidy on industries is also expected to reduce. This announcement was made by Vishwas Pathak, Independent Director, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) during a press conference.

Currently, the electricity for irrigation is supplied at night, which the farmers find difficult. However, under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0, the solar panels would be installed near agricultural feeders.

Pathak said that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have decided to implement Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana 2.0 with the plans to operate at least 30 percent of agricultural feeders in each district on solar energy by December 2025.

With an investment of INR 30,000 crore, the project which is expected to be completed by 2026, will create thousands of jobs.

Apart from using government land, MSEDCL will also acquire private land on lease from farmers for installing solar panels. This will give farmers an opportunity to earn INR 1.25 lakh per hectare annually.
