Lightsource bp has announced its strategic entry into the Japanese market with the acquisition of a 15MWp solar project in Hokkaido.

The development marks an important expansion of the company’s operations in the Asia-Pacific region, leveraging its global expertise to help support Japan’s energy transition.

The entry into Japan is an important step in Lightsource bp’s broader APAC growth strategy and lays the groundwork for further growth in the region. The company’s operations in Australia, where it has developed and constructed significant solar assets, and its expansion in New Zealand, Taiwan, and South Korea highlight its ability to scale operations effectively while tailoring solutions to meet local needs.

Japan’s renewable energy strategy aims to increase solar capacity as part of its broader commitment to decarbonisation and energy diversification. With its established track record of delivering complex renewable energy developments globally, Lightsource bp is well-positioned to support efforts to advance the energy transition in the Japanese market by fostering strong partnerships with local stakeholders.

Adam Pegg, Chief Operating Officer for APAC at Lightsource bp, commented: “Our entry into Japan reflects our commitment to contributing to the region’s energy transition. By combining our international experience with local partnerships, we aim to support Japan’s renewable energy goals while building a strong and sustainable pipeline of renewable energy projects. This is just the beginning of our operations in Japan, and we’re excited to support the nation’s ambition for a low-carbon future.

“As a global organisation, our success depends on fostering collaboration and creating long-term value for the communities we work with,” Pegg added. “We’re committed to building partnerships in Japan that deliver shared benefits – for the economy, the environment, local communities, and our partners.”

Lightsource bp’s entry into Japan marks its growth from 19 to 20 global markets, reinforcing its position as a key player in the renewable energy sector. The company has a global solar development pipeline of over 58GW of mature and early-stage projects, of which nearly 8GW are in APAC. As a highly experienced developer, particularly in large-scale utility solar projects, Lightsource bp continues to deliver sustainable energy solutions that generate economic and environmental benefits globally and regionally.
