Lhyfe Inks MoU with KEYOU to Develop Hydrogen Mobility in Germany

Lhyfe and KEYOU have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop hydrogen mobility in Germany and Europe, focusing initially on the Baden-Württemberg region with plans to supply hydrogen-powered trucks.

Green and renewable hydrogen producer Lhyfe and hydrogen combustion engines maker KEYOU have announced that they have signed an agreement to develop hydrogen mobility in Germany and Europe, with an initial focus on the Baden-Württemberg region. KEYOU will give priority to regions that are able to fuel their vehicles with green hydrogen.

KEYOU and Lhyfe intend to work together to develop localised ecosystems that bring together the infrastructure for the production and distribution of renewable hydrogen, and the use of heavy-duty hydrogen vehicles. The two companies will be collaborating to develop a joint approach that includes vehicles, renewable hydrogen and refuelling solutions, and promote it to key customers.

With the green hydrogen production capacity planned by Lhyfe in the Schwäbisch Gmünd region, around 100 trucks can be put into operation between 2026 and 2030. These will be supplied by KEYOU to customers in the region.

‍As per a joint statement by the two companies, Lhyfe is currently building its largest production facility in Schwäbisch Gmünd, near Stuttgart, Germany. “The plant, which is expected to be installed by the end of the year, will be capable of producing up to 4 tonnes of green hydrogen per day (10 MW installed capacity). Lhyfe has secured the supply of green electricity for this site by signing a long-term power purchase agreement (corporate PPA) with EDP Renewables for a period of 15 years,” it said.

Commenting on the development, Pedro Bravo, Chief Sales Officer of KEYOU said, “Hydrogen mobility will only make a real difference if the hydrogen used is green. At KEYOU, we want to deploy our truck fleets in regions where green hydrogen is available to our customers. We are therefore pleased to join forces with Lhyfe, one of the pioneers in the production and distribution of this green fuel in Germany and Europe. Our coordinated development opens up great opportunities.”

Luc Graré, Head of Central and Eastern Europe at Lhyfe added, “This agreement with KEYOU completes the implementation of a comprehensive hydrogen mobility offer in Germany, and more specifically in Baden-Württemberg. Thanks to the determination and boldness of a number of players, green hydrogen production, distribution with JET H2 and H2 MOBILITY Deutschland, a range of vehicles with KEYOU and a platform with Heroes are now available. Together, we are making the energy transition ambitions of transport operators a reality.”

Lhyfe also announced in early September that the company will supply four filling stations operated by H2 MOBILITY Deutschland in Germany over a five-year period, starting in 2025. The first hydrogen deliveries will supply four filling stations, including two in Baden-Württemberg (Mannheim and Heidelberg). At the end of 2023, Lhyfe had announced that its green hydrogen will also be used to power the ‘H2-Aspen’ industrial park and a JETH2 hydrogen filling station, now called MINT.

With the production capacity planned by Lhyfe, KEYOU will be able to put up to 100 vehicles into operation between 2026 and 2030, with an annual ramp-up of 20 trucks. The project will start in the Schwäbisch-Gmünd area, with other regions in Germany to follow. The estimated hydrogen demand for 100 vehicles is approximately 1,000 tons of hydrogen per year.
