Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced the incorporation of a new subsidiary, L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt. Ltd. (LTGEK), for the development of green hydrogen projects.

“L&T Green Energy Kandla Pvt. Ltd. is formed for the purpose of development of green hydrogen and its derivatives (including green ammonia, etc.) projects and to carry out other related business activities,” the company stated in a regulatory filing.

Green hydrogen, which is produced through the electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy sources, is regarded as a clean, flexible, and versatile energy carrier. It is expected to play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions and addressing the growing challenge of balancing energy demand with the need to combat climate change.

The filing further mentioned that the entire share capital of INR 1 lakh is subscribed by L&T Energy Green Tech Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., along with its nominee shareholder.

Larsen & Toubro, which had earlier commissioned its first green hydrogen plant in Gujarat, aims to expand its footprint in the green energy sector through this new entity.

Gujarat's Kandla port is set to become India's first port to house an operational green hydrogen plant using indigenous electrolysers. The green hydrogen plant at Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla will be operational by July 2025.

The electrolysers for the 1 MW green hydrogen plant were manufactured by L&T under the 'Make-in-India' initiative manufactured by L&T under the 'Make-in-India' initiative. This will subsequently be scaled up to 10 MW in the future. There are also plans to expand into green ammonia production.
