In an ambitious move towards sustainable development, Kuwait is poised to revolutionize its energy sector under a visionary plan unveiled by Engineer Suad Al-Hussein, head of the Kuwaiti Society for Sustainable Energy.

As per the directives from the country leaders, Kuwait aims to generate 15 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, marking a significant stride towards energy independence and environmental stewardship.

As per local daily, Engineer Al-Hussein emphasized the necessity for establishing the Kuwait Center for Renewable Energy, that will serve as a regional hub, fostering collaboration, research, and innovation in renewable energy technologies. Further, it seeks to centralize efforts currently fragmented across various agencies, ensuring cohesive strategies and efficient resource allocation.

Dwelling on the societal benefits, Al-Hussein stressed on the potential savings of approximately 4,600 million barrels of oil annually, translating to about 400 million dinars, at current market rates.

As per the reports, the roadmap includes expanding upon successful pilot projects like Al-Shaqaya, which currently generates 70 MW of renewable energy. Additionally, plans are underway to scale up this initiative, with approvals pending from the Council of Ministers to add an additional 1,100 megawatts to the national grid. This ambitious expansion aims to meet growing energy demands while reducing carbon emissions in alignment with global environmental goals.

Engineer Al-Hussein also stressed upon the pivotal role of legislative support in promoting renewable energy adoption among citizens. The proposed legislation incentivizes households to invest in solar panels, offering potential returns by selling excess energy back to the grid.

“This initiative not only empowers individuals to harness clean energy but also stimulates economic activity through job creation and technological advancement,” said Al-Hussein.

It can be said that Kuwait's commitment to renewable energy is set to transform its landscape, encompassing educational reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and regulatory frameworks aimed at ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.

Moreover, as global momentum towards renewable energy intensifies, Kuwait is moving ahead to lead the region in embracing a greener, more resilient energy transition.
