KERC Approves Enhancement of Sanctioned Load Up to 10 kW for SRTPV Consumers

Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission streamlines rooftop solar installation process, allowing enhanced sanctioned load and 10 percent capacity tolerance, promoting greater participation in the PM Surya Ghar Scheme.

In order to streamline the process for rooftop solar photovoltaic (SRTPV) system installations and promote the adoption of solar energy, the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has issued new guidelines for consumers with a sanctioned load of up to 10 kW.

The new measures aim to facilitate greater participation in the PM Surya Ghar Scheme and address technological advancements in solar module capacities.

According to the new order, if a consumer’s sanctioned load is less than the capacity of the SRTPV system they intend to install, the distribution licensee will automatically enhance the sanctioned load up to 10 kW to match the system’s requirements. The distribution licensee will also be responsible for augmenting the capacity of the distribution line or transformers if necessary, as per the relevant regulations.

The Commission has also taken into account the rapid technological advancements in solar modules, with system integrators raising concerns about mismatched capacities between modules and applied load. As stated in the order, “A capacity tolerance of up to 10 percent shall be allowed for SRTPV systems up to 10 kW capacity, provided the AC capacity of the inverter does not exceed the sanctioned load.” This adjustment will help accommodate the evolving needs of consumers as module ratings continue to change.

For example, if a consumer has a 5 kW sanctioned load, they can install a SRTPV system with a DC capacity of up to 5.4 kW (with a tolerance of 10 percent), while ensuring the AC inverter capacity remains within the 5 kW sanctioned load. Similarly, for a 10 kW sanctioned load, a consumer can install a system with up to 10.8 kW DC capacity, provided the AC inverter is limited to 10 kW.

Consumers will be required to pay the applicable charges, deposit additional security, and sign an updated power supply agreement for the enhanced load before commissioning the SRTPV system, in accordance with the state’s electricity supply regulations.

These changes are designed to address the growing demand for solar power in Karnataka, simplify the installation process, and remove barriers to rooftop solar adoption, contributing to the state’s renewable energy goals.
