In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable development, Kerala has earmarked a substantial budget of over INR 12,400 crore for the creation of a green transport corridor, coupled with an allocation of INR 90 crore for the initial phase of the green hydrogen valley project.

The INR 90 crore budget for the green hydrogen valley project is slated to establish three hydrogen valley platforms, distributing funds across the entire hydrogen value chain, encompassing production, distribution, and transportation.

The state envisions the development of two green hydrogen valleys in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, with the proposal already submitted to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) for the Kochi valley and ongoing preparations for the Vizhinjam project.

Under the global initiative Mission Innovation, led by 23 countries and the European Commission, the DST has invited proposals to set up hydrogen valleys, aiming to catalyze action and investment in clean energy research and development.

Kerala's plans extend beyond the hydrogen valley project, as it aims to transform major transport corridors such as the west coast canal, coastal, and hill highways into green economic trade corridors. The INR 12,400 crore green transport corridor project includes INR 2,400 crore for the west coast canal, INR 6,500 crore for the coastal highway, and INR 3,500 crore for the hill highway.

The objective is to develop a network of hydrogen and electric vehicle charging infrastructure along the Vizhinjam to Kochi corridor, integrated with hydrogen generation and floating solar power projects.
