Karnataka and Gujarat are two Indian states evolving as in total readiness and commitment towards the transition to clean electricity, a new inclusive report from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) and Ember.

The report assesses 16 Indian states, which altogether amount for 90% of the nation’s annual power need, throughout four dimensions.

The dimensions record a state's preparedness to move away from fossil fuel-based power, it enables to incentivise greener market partaking, its power system's dependence and policies reinforce for power sector decarbonisation.

India's updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) aims have placed the country on the right way for transitioning its electricity sector. To attain those targets, the Centre requires the cooperation of the states to move faster in their clean electricity transitions.

Besides moving towards renewable energy potential and storage, the report evaluates that states take a multi-factoral approach towards the clean electricity transition, which contains efforts on the demand side.

The report also spotlights that newer bilateral financial markets strategies like Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPA) and Contracts for Difference (CfD) have greater potential to access the market and give purchasers and moderators as the required guarantee on tackling intermittent renewable energy generation.

The report sketches on the focal aspects for states to improve their readiness for transition, like exploiting wind and solar generation potential and utilizing more energy storage products and services, including batteries and pumped hydro, for better renewable energy integration.

Eventually, the report discusses that some states must also cover the lag between their electricity transition policies' target and the implementation of the action.
