The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) have renewed their electric power exchange agreement, extending cooperation between the two nations from January 1 to December 31.
As per the local reports, the agreement was signed by NEPCO General Manager Sofian Bataineh and EETC Chairperson Mona Rizk, in the presence of Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh.
Minister Kharabsheh emphasised the significance of the renewed pact in enhancing electricity reliability and advancing energy infrastructure across Jordan and Egypt. He described the partnership as a 'model' for regional power grid interconnection, highlighting its 25-year legacy.
The agreement reflects the shared commitment of both countries to strengthening energy systems, fostering regional electrical integration, and stabilising power grids. Officials also noted the role of the partnership in promoting renewable energy and coordinating efforts to boost the capacity of existing interconnection projects.
Feasibility studies are currently underway to assess upgrades aimed at bolstering sustainable development and enhancing energy security.
Jordan and Egypt have exchanged electric power since 1999 through a 13-kilometre, 400-kilovolt submarine cable across the Gulf of Aqaba, with a capacity of 500 MW. The link forms part of the Eight-Country Interconnection Project, which connects Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, and Turkey.
