Japan’s YKK Corp. Makes Significant Greenhouse Gas Cuts with Emphasis on Renewable Energy

Japan's Tokyo based firm,YKK Corp., dealing in fastening products and architectural products, has made significant strides in its sustainability efforts, reporting a 56.2 percent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and a 32.7 percent decrease in Scope 3 emissions for fiscal year 2023, based on FY2018 figures. This achievement highlights YKK’s commitment to its ambitious Sustainability Vision 2050, which emphasises climate action and resource efficiency.

This aligns with YKK’s strategy of significantly increasing renewable energy use. Over the past fiscal year, the company transitioned six additional sites to 100 percent green energy, raising the total to 37 global locations. This shift increased the proportion of renewable energy in YKK’s electricity mix from 46.1 percent  in FY2022 to 56.5 percent in FY2023.

YKK's dedication to renewable energy is evident in its investment in solar power and other sustainable practices. For instance, the YKK Vietnam Co., Ltd. Ha Nam Plant has integrated solar panels to support its renewable energy goals. This move reflects a broader trend within YKK to adopt energy-saving technologies and infrastructure improvements, which are crucial in achieving their target of reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 50 percent by 2030, as recognised by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Looking ahead, YKK plans to enhance its Sustainability Vision 2050 by focusing on advancing a circular economy, promoting biodiversity, and integrating more sustainable materials. The company’s ongoing commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship highlights its role in leading the apparel industry towards a more sustainable future.

The firm will release its integrated report titled 'This is YKK 2024' in August,as per the reports.
