TM EDISON, a joint venture between DEME and Jan De Nul, has gained the tender to construct the world’s first artificial energy island offshore from Belgium.

Under the joint venture TM Edison, the two offshore construction companies capped an EPCI (engineering, procurement, construction and installation) deal with Belgian transmission system operator Elia stretching the proceeding design and construction of Princess Elisabeth Island in the Belgian region of the North Sea.

The energy island will be situated around 45 km off the coast. The construction of the island will start in early 2024 and continue until August 2026.

The artificial island will be located within the Princess Elisabeth wind zone including a small harbour and a helicopter platform will also be laid in a way to permit people to visit the island. The energy island has also obtained finance from the European COVID Recovery Fund.
