Ireland’s Fourth Onshore RESS Auction Secures 960 MW Solar Capacity

Ireland's RESS 4 auction provisionally supports 1,334 MW of renewable energy, with 960 MW of solar and 374 MW of wind at an average price of EUR 96.85/MWh. Expanded eligibility boosted participation, promising significant green job growth and investment.

The fourth round of Ireland's Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS 4) has provisionally secured 1,334 MW of new onshore renewable electricity capacity, comprising 960 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and 374 MW of onshore wind projects. These projects were procured at an average auction price of EUR 96.85 (£81.73) per MWh, reflecting a notable decrease from the prices in the previous two auctions.

The generation-weighted average price for solar projects was slightly higher, at EUR 104.76 per MWh. According to the Irish government, these provisional results compare favorably with recent renewable energy auctions across Europe, both in terms of the volume of energy procured and the competitive pricing achieved. Final results are expected to be released later this month.

The outcome of RESS 4 has been described as 'surprisingly successful' by energy market analytics firm Aurora Energy Research. The firm attributed this success to recent changes in the scheme’s eligibility criteria, which allowed projects currently under judicial review to participate in the auction. This broader eligibility framework, along with newly introduced risk provisions, follows criticisms from the Irish Solar Energy Association (ISEA) over RESS 3. The ISEA had warned that the rigid design of the third round led to "avoidable systemic failures" and limited success.

As per reports, the Irish government has emphasised that the RESS 4 results represent an increase of over 20 percent in the country's renewable energy capacity. Eamon Ryan, the Minister for the Environment, Climate, and Communications, underscored the strategic importance of renewable energy for Ireland’s future prosperity. "Delivering on our ambition through RESS and other policy measures will create tens of thousands of new green jobs for communities across the State and attract investment," he stated.

With the forthcoming finalisation of RESS 4, Ireland is poised to continue its trajectory toward a greener energy future, aligning with national and EU-level climate goals.
