The Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, held discussions with representatives from the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) and a Saudi oil services company to advance the development of the Najaf solar power plant. This initiative is part of Iraq's efforts to diversify its energy sources and achieve sustainability in power generation.
During the meeting, the Saudi company presented advanced technologies for recycling waste from thermal and gas power plants. Discussions also explored the transfer of these technologies to Iraq, enabling the efficient operation of existing power plants.
A key focus of the talks was the invitation to Saudi-based ACWA Power to build and operate the 1,000-MW Najaf solar power plant. This project aligns with Iraq's broader national strategy to generate 12,000 MW of solar energy by 2030, including 7,500 MW assigned to specialized companies.
In addition to collaborating with Saudi Arabia, Iraq has engaged with international firms like TotalEnergies and PetroChina to develop major power projects, including a 1,000 MW plant in Basra and a 750 MW facility in Muthanna.
These initiatives underscore Iraq's commitment to addressing its rising energy demands and transitioning towards renewable energy solutions.
