India has witnessed an extraordinary surge in its renewable energy capacity, scaling a remarkable 2.35 times over the past decade, as reported by the Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power, R.K. Singh.
The data, presented in a written reply to questions in Rajya Sabha, outlines the year-wise trajectory of cumulative installed capacity in (MW) from the fiscal year 2013-14 to 2023-24.
The growth is evident in the past two years as the capacity was 156,606.9 MW in 2021-22 which increased to 172,009.0 MW in 2022-23.
This substantial growth, amounting to 2.35 times the original capacity, reflects India's commitment to sustainable and clean energy. The Union Minister attributed this success to various government initiatives since 2014, including the National Solar Mission's target enhancement, waiving of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges for solar and wind power, trajectory declaration for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) until 2030, and the launch of numerous schemes and programs.
Additionally, the state-wise details of subsidies provided under various schemes to encourage new and renewable energy production in the last three years were disclosed. States like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka emerged as frontrunners in availing subsidies for diverse projects, including rooftop installations, solar off-grid initiatives, and biomass projects.
The Minister emphasized the importance of these efforts in contributing to a sustainable energy future for the nation.
