As the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP28, approaches, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) anticipates India's influential role in driving a substantial change in the global strategy to combat climate-related challenges.
Dr. Ashish Chaturvedi, Head of Action for Climate and Environment at UNDP India, emphasized the need to pivot the focus from governments to include individuals at the core of collective endeavors to address climate change.
Representing UNDP India, Chaturvedi stated that India is poised to advocate for a significant shift in how the world tackles climate-related issues during COP28 in Dubai, commencing on November 30.
Similar to India's emphasis during its G20 presidency, the intersections of climate, health, and gender are expected to be highlighted.
Chaturvedi highlighted the foundational concept of the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in October 2022.
LiFE promotes an environmentally friendly lifestyle, advocating for resource efficiency, mindful consumption, and overall well-being.
India plans to showcase its commitment to achieving ambitious renewable energy targets by 2030 at COP28. Chaturvedi noted that India is on track to triple its renewable energy targets by 2030, a significant accomplishment that warrants global recognition.
Chaturvedi highlighted the Global Stocktake as a key agenda item at COP28, marking the conclusion of its first two-year cycle. The Global Stocktake is a comprehensive review that evaluates worldwide efforts to reduce emissions, build resilience, and secure financing to combat climate change.
