India has surpassed 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, reaching 100.33 GW as of January 31, 2025, as part of its goal to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.

Commenting on the achievement, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, stated, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India’s energy journey over the past ten years has been historic and inspiring. Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks and rooftop solar projects have brought about revolutionary changes. As a result, today India has successfully achieved the target of 100 GW of solar energy production. In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path.”

India’s solar capacity has increased by 3,450 percent over the past decade, growing from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. Currently, 84.10 GW of solar projects are under implementation, with another 47.49 GW under tendering. Additionally, hybrid and round-the-clock renewable energy projects account for 64.67 GW under implementation and tendering, bringing the total of solar and hybrid projects to 296.59 GW.

In 2024, India installed 24.5 GW of solar capacity, more than twice the installations in 2023. Utility-scale solar grew by 18.5 GW in 2024, nearly 2.8 times higher than the previous year, with major contributions from states such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh.

The rooftop solar sector also saw significant growth, with 4.59 GW of new capacity added in 2024, a 53 percent increase compared to 2023. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024, played a key role in this expansion, with about 8.46 lakh rooftop solar installations completed nationwide in the first 11 months since implementation.

India’s solar manufacturing capacity has also expanded from 2 GW in 2014 to about 60 GW in 2024. With continued policy support, the country is on track to reach 100 GW of solar module production capacity by 2030.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is making rooftop solar a household reality. It’s a game-changer in sustainable energy, empowering every home with clean power. With 100 GW solar power achieved, India is moving towards energy independence and a greener future,” said Joshi.
