The Union MNRE has informed that the 'Technology and Innovation Report 2023' disclosed by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, has ranked India at 46th position in its 'Frontier Technologies Readiness Index'.
The Minister stated that while the Government has not organised any research/survey on R&D investment in the previous year towards green energy transition, a committee was formed earlier with an external panel of experts under the Chairmanship of Dr. Anil Kakodkar, (Former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission).
The Committee examined the entire R&D programme and funding system, identified the current focus areas, and set a goal to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources in the nation's energy mix. The Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development Programme (RE-RTD) has been extended from 2021–2025 with a financial allocation of INR 228.00 crore based on the Committee's recommendations.
The MNRE is levying the Renewable Energy Research and Technology Development Programme through a variety of research institutions and enterprises to develop domestic technology and manufacturing for wider applications of renewable sources in a productive and economical way.
Government and non-profit research organisations receive up to 100 percent of the funding, whilst industry, start-ups, private institutes, entrepreneurs, and manufacturing facilities receive up to 70 percent of the funding.
