The Government of India has introduced comprehensive guidelines for initiating pilot projects aimed at incorporating green hydrogen in the shipping sector.
Issued by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the 'Scheme Guidelines for implementation of Pilot projects for use of Green Hydrogen in the Shipping Sector' will pave the way for significant advancements in sustainable maritime practices.
As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, MNRE, in collaboration with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) and nominated implementing agencies, will spearhead pilot projects to replace fossil fuels and fossil fuel-based feedstock with green hydrogen and its derivatives in the shipping sector.
Two key focus areas have been identified under these pilot projects - the retrofitting of existing ships to run on green hydrogen or its derivatives and the development of bunkering and refueling facilities in ports along international shipping lanes for fuels based on green hydrogen.
With a total budgetary outlay of INR 115 crores until the financial year 2025-26, the scheme aims to drive the development of essential infrastructure, including refueling stations, storage, and distribution networks, fostering the establishment of a green hydrogen ecosystem in the shipping sector. Anticipating a reduction in production costs, the utilization of green hydrogen in the shipping industry is expected to surge over the years.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, with an outlay of INR 19,744 crores up to FY 2029-30, aligns with India's vision to achieve self-reliance through clean energy. The mission is poised to play a pivotal role in significant decarbonization, reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports, and positioning India as a global leader in green hydrogen technology and markets.
