India's Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Ltd. has secured approval from Nepal to develop a second hydropower project in the country strengthening bilateral energy cooperation.
Currently, SJVN is developing a 900 MW Arun -III hydroelectric project on the Arun River in the eastern part of Nepal. The project is anticipated to get completed by the next year.
The draft project development agreement to develop the 669 MW Lower Arun Hydropower project in eastern Nepal has been approved by the Investment Board Nepal (IBN) chaired by Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal commonly known as ‘Prachanda’.
Meanwhile, Prachanda is all set to hold a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House bolstering ties between the two countries.
IBN had previously approved an INR 92.68 billion investment for the development of the project. If all goes as anticipated, the 669 MW transformative project will prove to be a ground-breaking achievement for Nepal’s socio-economic development.
The SJVN has formed a local company in Nepal named Lower Arun Power Development Company. Located in the Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur districts, the Lower Arun project will not have any reservoir or dam. It will be a tailrace development of Arun-III.
This is apparently the third project undertaken on the Arun River after the 900 MW Arun-III and 695 MW Arun-IV hydroelectricity projects.
Together, the three projects are expected to produce around 2300 MW of electricity from the river in the Sankhuwasabha district.
