India, Bhutan to Strengthen Collaboration in Hydropower Projects

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Bhutan Lyonpo Gem Tshering met Union Power Minister Manohar Lal in New Delhi to discuss ways to strengthen their cooperation in the hydropower sector along with finalising the tariff with the Puna-2 Hydropower Project in Bhutan.

India and its neighbouring state Bhutan are looking at avenues to strengthen ties in the hydropower sector. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Bhutan Lyonpo Gem Tshering, recently met with the Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, in New Delhi.

As per a statement issued by the Ministry of Power, the meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding cooperation between the two nations in the hydropower sector.

The two countries discussed how both sides can enhance their collaboration to further boost energy production from the Puna-1 Hydroelectric Power (HEP) project. They also discussed the tariff for the Puna-2 project. Further, the two leaders explored potential avenues for future cooperation in energy generation.

Lal reaffirmed India’s commitment to furthering hydropower development with Bhutan, noting that “More Power means more happiness.” He assured full support to Bhutan in this critical area of collaboration, underscoring the strategic and mutually beneficial nature of these projects.

India and Bhutan share a robust partnership in the hydropower sector, with several key projects contributing significantly to Bhutan’s economy and providing renewable energy to India. This meeting marks another step forward in deepening bilateral relations and enhancing regional energy security through sustainable energy cooperation.
