India-Bangladesh Consortium Rampal Plant to Restart Power Production

Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company (BIFPC) is a consortium of Indian state-owned National Thermal Power Company (NTPC) and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). BIFPC is the owner and operator of the Rampal power plant.

One of the sub-divisions, Unit-1 of the plant is having 660 MW capacity, was forced to shut down on January 14, 2023, due to a shortage of coal.

The officials of the power plant were not able to open any letters of credit (LC) to import coal due to the dollar crisis.

The first unit of the 1,320MW power plant in Bagerhat is distributing 620-630 MW of electricity to the national power-grid every day across the Mongla-Mawa-Aminbazar power-grid line of Dhaka.

Rampal power plant, also called as Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant, is one of the largest power plants in Bangladesh established at the cost of $2 billion and $1.6 billion as Indian Development Assistance under the Concessional Financing Scheme.

The situation encircling the currently unit requirement of 5,000 tonnes of coal to deliver 560-570 MW each day, implying the first shipment would be enough to operate the unit for six days. Seemingly, it would be possible to execute the unit for another 10 days after the second shipment of coal arrives.

The official discussed about other consignment project of 50,000 MT of coal is also approaching the country soon. Also mentioned is that the plant's unit-2 is anticipated to be functional from June, 2023.

Rampal plant project, spanning over 1834 acres of land, is located 14 kilometres north of the world's largest mangrove forest Sundarbans which is a UNESCO world heritage site.
