India Agrivoltaics Alliance Launches to Foster Synergy Between Solar Energy and Agriculture

Supported by the India Climate Collaborative (ICC) and Bloomberg Philanthropies, IAA aims to bring together a consortium of organizations across the agriculture and solar sectors to drive the harmonious coexistence of renewables and agriculture.

The India Agrivoltaics Alliance (IAA) was officially launched during the inaugural India Agrivoltaics Summit. The event featured the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Lalit Bohra, who inaugurated the alliance.

Supported by the India Climate Collaborative (ICC) and Bloomberg Philanthropies, IAA aims to bring together a consortium of organizations across the agriculture and solar sectors to drive the harmonious coexistence of renewables and agriculture.

The 12 organisations steering the alliance include the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI), Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Indian Society of Agricultural Engineering (ISAE), Indian Chamber of Food and Agriculture (ICFA), The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), Indo-German Energy Forum (IGEF), Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ), Institute for Sustainable Energy Policies (ISEP) Japan, and Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, with the alliance's secretariat hosted by NSEFI.

India faces a unique challenge, as the country's ambitious renewable energy goals require substantial land resources. Simultaneously, 60 percent of India's land area is dedicated to agriculture.

Agrivoltaics, or the integration of solar panels with agricultural land, offers a promising solution to optimize land usage, drive climate-resilient agriculture, and enhance farmers' income.

The India Agrivoltaics Alliance aims to facilitate collaboration with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA), Government of India.

It seeks to develop effective business models and financial instruments for agrivoltaics, examine the socio-economic impact of agrivoltaics on Indian agriculture, and promote the inclusion of women and youth in this emerging field.
