Iberdrola and Amazon have expanded their long-standing global clean power partnership. The expansion comes with the signing of a major renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) for 159 MW of the East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm in the UK, equivalent to 700 GWh of clean electricity per year.

The agreement extends beyond the UK, with Amazon also signing PPAs with Iberdrola for projects in Germany, the US, and elsewhere in the UK. Over the lifespan of these PPAs, Amazon has committed to contracting 54,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola.

The East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, expected to be fully operational in 2026, will support over 2,300 jobs during construction and 100 long-term jobs over its lifetime. With a capacity of 1.4 GW, the project will be powered by 95 Siemens Gamesa 14.7 MW turbines, making it the second-largest offshore wind farm globally.

The announcement of the agreement took place at the Haizea Wind Group facility in Bilbao, where the manufacture of 50 monopiles for the East Anglia THREE wind farm is underway. These monopiles will be transported to the UK to support the wind turbines.

Furthermore, the capacity from East Anglia THREE will contribute to Amazon's commitment to power all its operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of the company's original target. Amazon has been a global leader in renewable energy procurement since 2020, with over 500 solar and wind projects worldwide.

In addition to the clean power agreement, Amazon and Iberdrola have launched the global 'Journey to Cloud' program, which involves migrating Iberdrola's operations to the Cloud and leveraging AWS's High-Performance Computing and big data services. This initiative aims to enhance operational efficiency and innovation in the renewable energy sector.

Moreover, the two companies are collaborating on projects related to Smart Grids, incorporating generative AI through Amazon Bedrock to improve customer experience and support field workers.

Sergio Hernández de Deza, Director of Large Customers and Industrial Solutions at Iberdrola, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “Companies like Amazon are leading the corporate drive to advance the renewable energy industry and guarantee energy security, sustainability, price stability, and competitiveness. Today, two global leaders join forces in an agreement that will mean more energy independence, more local jobs, and lower emissions on both sides of the Atlantic. “We are excited to partner with Amazon in the field of generative AI and big data, allowing our business to innovate and scale at speed.”

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, reiterated Amazon's commitment to renewable energy and praised Iberdrola's utilization of cloud and AI technologies to accelerate renewable energy deployment.
