Hyundai Engineering & Construction has secured two contracts totalling USD 389 million from the Saudi Electricity Company to build crucial transmission lines connecting solar power plants to Saudi Arabia's grid.

The project, slated for completion in November 2027, involves constructing a 491-kilometer power grid linking solar facilities in the Medina and Jeddah regions. This win underscores Hyundai's established expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects and strengthens its presence in the Saudi Arabian market.

The project is divided into two parts. The first, the Humayji Solar Power Connection, involves building a 311-kilometer transmission line from a planned solar power plant in Humayji to a substation near Medina. The second part, the Qulais Solar Power Connection, consists of a 180-kilometer line connecting a solar power plant in Qulais to an existing power line near Mecca. These high-voltage lines are essential for efficiently transmitting electricity over long distances, showcasing the project's technical complexity.

Hyundai's success in securing these contracts comes after a competitive bidding process held by the Western Saudi Electricity Company. The company has a strong track record in the region, including the completion of a massive 4000MW HVDC double circuit transmission line, a project valued at over 1 trillion won.

A Hyundai official attributed the company's success to its extensive experience in Saudi transmission line construction, citing 40 completed projects and a strong relationship with the Saudi Electricity Company. The company aims to leverage this experience to expand its 'K-power grid' construction capabilities globally.

This project aligns with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, a national initiative aimed at diversifying the economy and reducing reliance on oil. Investing in renewable energy sources, including solar power, is a central component of this vision. Hyundai's involvement in connecting these solar plants to the national grid plays a vital role in Saudi Arabia's transition to a more sustainable energy future.
