Hygenco Green Energies has announced receiving the Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) pre-certification from Bureau Veritas under CertifHy scheme.

This pre-certification paves the way for Hygenco to export green ammonia to the European Union, further advancing its mission to deliver sustainable energy solutions and strengthen its commitment to a greener future, said the company in a statement further adding that Hygenco is only amongst the two Indian firms to achieve this feat.

The CertifHy scheme, officially recognised by the European Commission, enables end-users across the EU to access Green Hydrogen or low-carbon hydrogen. It offers a comprehensive framework for certifying renewable hydrogen and e-fuels, ensuring full compliance with EU regulations and international standards. Hygenco's commitment to these rigorous standards was thoroughly audited by the Bureau Veritas, a globally recognised testing agency.

Commenting on the development, Amit Bansal, Co-Founder and CEO of Hygenco, stated, “Securing the RFNBO pre-certification for our green ammonia marks a pivotal milestone in our journey to drive the energy transition and support global decarbonisation efforts. We are committed to leveraging cutting-edge technology to produce low-cost, sustainable green ammonia for our clients worldwide.”

Hygenco's upcoming green ammonia plant, located at Tata Steel's Special Economic Zone Industrial Park in Gopalpur, Odisha, aims to produce a total of 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) upon full completion. The project, which is planned in multiple phases, with Phase 1 and Phase 2 each having a production capacity of 600 tonnes per day, will have the first phase operational by 2027.

Amit Ghosh, Senior Vice President at Bureau Veritas South Asia Region, said, “European Commission’s RFNBO regulations will affect not just hydrogen producers in Europe, but also any producer looking to access the European market. This has generated substantial interest, along with a wide range of questions regarding how these regulations will be interpreted beyond EU borders.”

He further added, “At Bureau Veritas, we are confident that pre-certification of Green Hydrogen Projects (including Green Hydrogen derivatives projects) is the most effective approach to ensure the practical implementation of these regulations, allowing producers to navigate the complexities of compliance. As the trusted certification body for CertifHy’s EU RFNBO Voluntary Scheme, Bureau Veritas is poised to support the growth of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives ecosystem. We are excited to play a central role in advancing global efforts toward a sustainable energy future.”

The CertifHy pre-certification boosts Hygenco’s reputation in the renewable energy market and opens doors to European markets, aligning with the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) targets.
