Huawei has announced the completion of the world’s largest microgrid power station, marking a significant milestone in renewable energy technology. The new facility, situated in Saudi Arabia, is set to play a pivotal role in powering the ambitious Red Sea Project, a vast tourism and development venture along the Saudi Red Sea coast.

The power station boasts a staggering capacity to generate one billion kWh of electricity annually. It features a robust 400 MW of photovoltaic power generation and 1.3 GWh of energy storage. This advanced microgrid solution, developed by Huawei over a decade, will support the Red Sea Project's goal of being the first city powered entirely by renewable energy. It can also cover 100+ km under a stable green energy supply.

Since September 2023, the microgrid has been supplying green power to the Red Sea Project. The project, with a total investment of USD 500 billion (approximately R1.88 trillion), aims to transform 50 islands into luxury tourism destinations, complete with an airport and numerous hotels, spread over 28,000 square kilometers.

The completion of this power station aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil through large-scale renewable energy projects. Huawei’s involvement  shows China's growing role in the development of Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure, including previous investments in the North-South railway, the Makkah Light railway, and various hotel projects within the Red Sea initiative.

It may be norted that In 2023, China emerged as the leading foreign direct investor in Saudi Arabia, with a remarkable USD 16.8 billion in greenfield investments. This partnership reflects a broader strategy by Beijing to strengthen economic ties with Riyadh, focusing on green development and energy transition.

The completion of Huawei’s microgrid power station represents a major step forward in the global shift towards renewable energy, showcasing the company's long-term commitment to advancing clean energy technologies.
