The Himachal Pradesh government announced that it would develop two Gram Panchayats each in all 12 districts of Himachal Pradesh as ‘Green Panchayats’ on a pilot basis by establishing solar power projects.

The officials stated that the government’s all-inclusive aim to redevelop the panchayats comprises establishing solar power projects with a capacity of 500 KW to 1 MW in each of these panchayats.

It stated, that a provision of INR 50 crore has been made for setting up these projects under the Himachal Pradesh Power Sector Development Programme. Himurja, a state government undertaking, is in the process of exploring gram panchayats for establishing solar projects.

The officials added, that the youth of the state will be provided a 40 percent subsidy for establishing solar power projects ranging from 500 KW to 2 MW on their own land or land taken on lease.

The power produced from these projects will be procured by the State Electricity Board.  A solar project of 500 KW costs approximately INR 2.10 crore and produces 2,250 units of power per day after becoming operational, producing a yearly income of approximately INR 25 lakh.

Besides this, the government has put forth a target to develop the state as a ‘Green Energy State’ by March 31, 2026. It is also working to upgrade the public mobility system in the state with the support of EVs to minimise dependence on fossil fuels and offset carbon emissions.
