GVK Mumbai International Airport Private Limited releases Sustainability Report 2014

Declares reduction by 3% in direct and 10% in indirect energy consumption viz-a-viz last year

Building upon its commitment to sustainability, GVK Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) released its second annual Sustainability Report - “The Sustainability Report 2014” highlighting the achievements of GVK MIAL. This report follows the latest GRI G4 reporting guidelines and meets in-accordance ‘Comprehensive’, the highest application level for completeness, transparency and stakeholder inclusiveness. CSIA is the 1st Airport in Asia and the 5th in the world to release a report as per the G4 guidelines.
 
“The Sustainability Report 2014” is designed to augment transparency of communication and provide stakeholders with information on MIALs performance, and how various aspects of MIALs business operations are connected. The report also provides an overview of how the organization mitigates risks while leveraging opportunities in a sustainable manner. The report is divided into six chapters covering performance of MIAL on the triple bottom line – Economy, Environment and Society. Each focus area is intended to provide stakeholders with relevant information pertaining to MIAL’s performance and approach, giving deeper insight into the organization as a whole. The report is yet another feather to MIAL’s sustainability programme amidst growing global awareness of the importance of sustainable development.

Creating Value:

  • Direct and indirect contribution to national GDP - Rs. 370.8 Billion
  • Contribution to state GDP -  3.49%
  • Jobs Created by MIALs operations  - 49,000

Delighting Consumers:

  • MIAL positioned as the 5th best airport in the 25-40 million passengers per annum category by ACI in 2013
  • Passenger handling capacity – 40 Million
  • 223 retail outlets across terminals (T2 – 63, T1 A – 42, T1 B – 82, T1 C - 36)
  • Airport Service Quality Score – 4.66 / 5

Environmental Stewardship: 

  • Reduction by3% in direct and 10% in indirect energy consumption viz-a-viz last year
  • Reduction by 5% in direct and 6% in indirect emission viz-a-viz last year
  • 10,000+ trees planted over the last year
  • LEED certification for the new Terminal 2
  • ACA Level 2 certification for carbon accounting and management

A “People” Organization:

  • 1,572 Employees in 2013-14 with 363 new recruitments (F: 317, M:1,255)
  • 1,095 hours of employee training

Corporate Citizenship:

  • Civil Defence Course: 143 civilians were trained in fire fighting, prevention and administration of first aid
  • Vastradaan Campaign: MIAL along with Umang Foundation distributed collected clothes to people from economically weaker sections of society
  • Support for Education:  MIAL along with Jagriti Yatra and SHILP extended support for education and skill development in meritorious candidates as well as children from economically weaker sections of society
  • Encouraging Sports: GVK Foundation has been sponsoring Tennis Tournaments such as GVK AISTA Tennis Championship

GVK Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) started its foray into Sustainability disclosure in 2011-12 and published its first sustainability report titled “The Sustainability Report 2012” in October 2012. The report was based on leading international guideline G3.1 of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and was awarded Level ‘A’ by GRI for its completeness, transparency and stakeholder inclusiveness. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a leading organization in the sustainability field. GRI promotes the use of sustainability reporting as a way for organizations to become more sustainable and contribute to sustainable development.​ GRI has pioneered and developed a comprehensive Sustainability Reporting Framework that is widely used around the world.
