Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has given in-principle approval for municipalities to set up solar plants at vital infrastructure sites, including sewage treatment plants (STPs), water treatment plants (WTPs), pumping stations, water works, and municipal buildings.

He has granted in-principle approval for the allocation of INR 45.37 crore from Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana to 32 additional municipalities for the installation of 6.7 MW solar plants at 60 locations.

So far, INR 114.34 crore has been allocated to 63 municipalities for installing solar plants at 136 locations, with 55 municipalities already completing installations at 97 sites.

Under Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana, funds have been dedicated to install solar plants across the state’s municipalities. The goal is to reduce electricity expenses by leveraging green, clean energy and encourage municipalities to achieve self-sufficiency.

The CM aims to extend the initiative, helping more municipalities install solar plants, cut electricity costs, and achieve self-reliance. It is estimated that utilising non-conventional energy in the state's local self-government institutions could lead to a 50 percent reduction in their electricity bills in the future.

This move further strengthen Gujarat's leadership in the renewable energy sector, extending it to local self-government institutions.
