The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) has invited comments and suggestions from the industry stakeholders on its draft proposal for allowing modification through the retro fitment of CNG and LPG kit and replacement of diesel engines with CNG/LPG engines for Bharat Stage (BS-VI) vehicles less than 3.5 tonnes.
The notification has laid down the type approval requirements for retro fitment.
CNG being an environment-friendly fuel will reduce the emission levels of Carbon monoxide, Hydrocarbon, particulate matter, and smoke, as compared to petrol and diesel engines.
Further, the Ministry has asked for suggestions from the concerned stakeholders within a period of 30 days.
For the vehicles manufactured on and after the 1st day of April 2016, the type approval norms as applicable, are subject to a minimum of Bharat Stage-IV emission norms for two and three wheeler, mentioned in the notification.
Also, for in-use BS-VI gasoline vehicles of categories L, M&N with GVW less than 3.5T, it added.
It is for the purpose of granting type approval to the vehicle fitted with a CNG (natural gas) kit, performance tests would be carried out.
For type approval of in-use BS-VI vehicles having diesel engine replaced by new CNG engine or by new LPG engine, it should meet BS-VI emission norms as applicable to the category of vehicle in respect of its place of use subject to tests mentioned in the notification.
