Government Mulling Over Central Database for Rooftop Solar Power Generation

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is exploring the creation of a central repository for real-time rooftop solar generation data to enhance electricity planning and scheduling.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is mulling over of creating a central repository of real-time rooftop solar power generations data. The Ministry intends to monitor these data for better planning and scheduling of electricity.

Currently, this data is available at the consumer level and also with the power distribution company. The generation data for rooftop solar systems is integrated into the inverter and can be accessed via a wireless internet connection or a SIM card.

Now the government is working with multiple agencies to devise a mechanism for collecting and making this data available in a central repository.

Launched on February 29, 2024, with a total outlay of INR 75,021 crore, the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to equip one crore households with rooftop solar systems by the end of the FY’27.

According to MNRE data, so far about 1.45 crore households have registered under the scheme, and 26.38 lakh applications have been submitted. Approximately 6.34 lakh rooftop solar installations have been recorded on the national portal since the scheme's launch.

Gujarat leads the nation with 2.86 lakh installations, followed by Maharashtra with 1.26 lakh and Kerala with 52,693. Other states like Uttar Pradesh (53,423), Tamil Nadu (20,151), and Rajasthan (18,697) have also contributed significantly, though some regions, such as Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Nagaland, reported minimal progress.

The government promptly addressed initial implementation challenges to accelerate the rollout. DISCOMs undertook auto-load enhancements to ensure the necessary power load capacity, while regulatory barriers were reduced by waiving Technical Feasibility Reports (TFR) for systems up to 10kW.

As per MNRE projections, India’s India's rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme will surpass 10 lakh by March 2025. It expects the installations to ramp up to 20 lakh by October 2025, 40 lakh by March 2026, and the targeted one crore by March 2027.
