The Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has introduced a new Standards and Labeling Program to promote energy efficiency and sustainability.

This initiative aims to assist consumers in making informed choices regarding the cost-effectiveness and energy performance of various energy-consuming appliances, thereby facilitating energy conservation and a greener environment. The latest product to be added to BEE’s Standards and Labeling Programs is the Grid-Connected Solar Inverter, with the launch of the Standards and Labeling Program for the solar inverter under voluntary phase, by the Union Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R.K. Singh in New Delhi.

The launch event, attended by dignitaries including Union Power Secretary Pankaj Agarwal and Secretary of New and Renewable Energy, Bhupinder Singh Bhalla, highlighted the significance of the Standards and Labeling Program in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and promoting quality in Indian products. Singh emphasized that the initiative not only contributes to carbon reduction but also saves money, benefiting both consumers and the energy system.

Under the voluntary phase, effective from March 15, 2024, until December 31, 2025, the Standards and Labeling Program for Grid-Connected Solar Inverters will establish a Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) for the product, focusing on inverters without storage and with a rated capacity of up to 100 kW. The program mandates that only BIS-certified solar inverters complying with safety standard IS 16221-2:2015 will be eligible. Endorsement labels will be based on minimum overall efficiency criteria in accordance with IS 17980:2022 / IEC 62891:2020.

This launch follows BEE's previous introduction of the Standards and  Labeling (S&L) Program for solar panels in October 2023. The introduction of the solar inverter program aims to enhance the efficiency of solar PV systems, allowing consumers to evaluate the overall efficiency and performance of inverters before making purchasing decisions.

The implementation of this program is expected to result in significant energy savings of 21.1 billion kWh between FY 2024-25 and FY 2033-2034, along with a potential reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of around 15.1 million tonnes during the same period. With the grid-connected solar inverter dominating the market with an 80 percent share, the initiative is poised to contribute significantly to India's renewable energy goals.

The Power Secretary, Pankaj Agarwal, emphasized that the program empowers consumers to invest wisely in reliable, efficient, and durable solar solutions, thereby accelerating India's transition towards sustainable energy. Director General of BEE, Abhay Bakre, hailed the introduction of the program as a pivotal moment in the quest for transparency, quality, and sustainability in the solar sector, applauding its role in promoting a greener and more energy-efficient future.
