In response to the escalating power demand in Jammu and Kashmir due to economic growth and increasing electrification during the winter season, the Government of India has allocated an additional 1972 MW of power to the Union Territory.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha met with Union Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister R.K. Singh in New Delhi to address the power deficit. The current demand in Jammu and Kashmir has reached around 2800 MW with a deficit of approximately 1400 MW.

Sinha requested additional power, and Minister R.K. Singh informed that 1500 MW has already been allocated from the Central pool, with an additional 472 MW under the Shakti policy. The total allocation of 1972 MW aims to meet the urgent power requirements of the Union Territory.

During the meeting, Minister Singh reviewed various Ministry of Power programs in Jammu and Kashmir and directed the expedited completion of ongoing projects related to transmission lines, smart meters, and distribution infrastructure.

The Ministry has sanctioned INR 10691 crores for strengthening the power systems in Jammu and Kashmir under programs like PMDP, PMRP, and RDSS. Over 4.25 lakh smart pre-paid meters have been installed, contributing to improved billing and collection efficiency.

Four Mega Hydro Electric Projects and MoUs for four more projects have been fast-tracked, aiming for completion before 2026. LG requested additional funds under RDSS for infrastructure modernization, and Singh encouraged sending proposals for positive consideration.
