The Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA) has elected Girish Tanti, Co-Founder and Vice Chairman of Suzlon Energy, as its new Chairman during its recently held Annual General Meeting in Chennai.
Tanti is recognised globally for his leadership in climate action and has held several key positions, including Vice Chairman of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) and Chairman of GWEC’s Global Supply Chain Forum, said the firm in its statement.
Alongside Tanti, the newly constituted Executive Committee includes Dr. Saravanan Manickam (Country Head, Nordex) as Vice Chairman-cum-Secretary and K Bharathy (CEO, Windar Renewable Energy) as Treasurer. Other notable members include RPV Prasad (Managing Director - India, Envision Energy) and Amit Kansal (CEO and Managing Director, Senvion).
Upon his appointment, Tanti emphasised the critical need to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030 to meet climate goals, while highlighting India's target of generating 50 percent of its energy from renewables and achieving 100 GW from wind power by that same year.
He stated, “India's wind sector has achieved ‘Atmanirbhar’ status, with a robust supply chain capable of manufacturing 17 GW of wind turbines annually. To bolster India’s net-zero ambitions, strengthening this ecosystem will be essential, requiring sustained government support through policies and incentives.”
The AGM coincided with Windergy India 2024, which featured over 300 exhibitors and attracted more than 10,000 visitors, a significant increase from 7,000 in 2023. The event was supported by the Union Ministry of Power, MNRE, and NITI Aayog, with distinguished attendees including Sudeep Jain (Additional Secretary, MNRE) and Prakash Chand Garg (Director & COO, CTUIL).
