India is making significant strides and exploring alternatives to traditional fossil fuels such as biofuels, green hydrogen and biogas in reducing its GHG emissions over the past decade (FY13 to FY23).
This is happening due to increasing demand for fossil fuels such as diesel, petrol, and LPG, which constitute approximately 70 percent of the country's fossil fuel consumption, as detailed in the 'Fueling the Future' report by Praxis Global Alliance and the Chamber of Commerce & Industry of India (CCI).
The report was presented at the Ethanol and Biofuel Conference by Meenakshi Lekhi, the Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture at the Government of India. It highlights the need to limit global warming to 1.5°C and to adopt sustainable, eco-friendly solutions to address the environmental, social, and economic challenges caused by global warming.
During the discussion about the report, Aryaman Tandon, Managing Partner and Co-founder of Praxis Global Alliance, stated, “India, the world's 3rd largest producer of greenhouse gases, is adopting environmentally friendly solutions to combat global warming. With the rapid increase in demand for bio-diesel, along with the government's proactive and transformative initiatives, we are not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also driving towards a greener, sustainable future for all."
The comprehensive report explores the potential of using green hydrogen and biofuels as alternatives to particular fossil fuels. It also outlines the government's transformative initiatives, providing a clear road map and funding to encourage the use of biofuels. 100+ distilleries and 5,000 CBG plants will be established, accelerating the production of biofuels and promoting ‘Make in India’. Over 5,000 potential job opportunities will contribute to economic growth and increase employment.
