German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called for a global target for the expansion of renewable energies at the 14th Petersberg Climate Dialogue held in Berlin.

Speaking at the event, Baerbock announced that every country should gear up to meet its commitments under the 2015 Paris climate accord. She further elaborated that according to the International Energy Agency, global renewable energy capacity needs to be tripled to reduce the planet’s temperature else the pain threshold of 1.5 degree Celsius would be exceeded significantly.

Baerbock supported the push for global targets to expand renewables launched by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in April. “I am advocating that we agree on a global target for renewable energies and energy efficiency,” Baerbock said at the two-day Petersberg climate talks. She added that the G7 had already set such targets, but there should be globally-binding goals for the expansion of wind and solar energy.

The Petersberg Climate Dialogue took place at the Federal Foreign Office at the invitation of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and COP28 President Designate Dr. Sultan Al Jaber.

Meanwhile, COP28 UAE is scheduled to take place at Expo City Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. The climate dialogue happens to be the preparation for the conference.
