GERC Approves New Tariffs for 259 MW Solar Projects to Solarise Gujarat Agriculture

GERC has approved tariffs between INR 2.35 and INR 3 per kWh for 259 MW solar projects aimed at solarising agricultural feeders in Gujarat. The projects, part of the PM KUSUM-C scheme, promote renewable energy in agriculture and rural areas.

The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has approved a tariff range of INR 2.35 to INR 3 per kWh for 259 MW of solar projects under the PM KUSUM-C scheme. These projects, presented by Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd. (PGVCL), aim to solarise agricultural feeders and promote renewable energy use in Gujarat's agriculture sector.

It may be noted that PGVCL submitted a petition to GERC in October 2023 for approval of tariff rates, which were determined through a competitive bidding process. The process invited bids for 259 MW of solar power across 101 plants, with tariffs ranging from INR 2.35 to INR 3 per kWh.

The petition also included technical requirements, emphasising the use of domestically manufactured components to support local industries. The successful bidders will be required to maintain these facilities for 25 years, with each project serving the annual energy needs of specific feeders and transitioning Gujarat’s agriculture to renewable energy.

This initiative seeks to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources in agriculture while promoting self-sustaining power usage in rural Gujarat.

GERC evaluated the bid stages and e-reverse auction results. In addition, the Commission set a levelised tariff of INR 2.76 per kWh for solar projects under 5 MW commissioned between April 2023 and March 2027. GERC also decided to amend its renewable energy connectivity regulations to allow connectivity rights transfer in certain cases.

Thus, GERC approved the tariff rates for 259 MW solar projects under the PM KUSUM-C scheme, recognising the transparency and regulatory compliance of the competitive bidding process, which followed the guidelines of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
