G. Satheesh Reddy, ex-DRDO chairman and currently the scientific advisor to Satish Reddy, is lifting the curtain on solar-powered drone - Suraj by Basavraj Bommai, Karnataka Chief Minister at Aero India in Bengaluru.

Drone manufacturer Garuda Aerospace introduce their initial solar-powered drone - Suraj, a multi-function drone for defence and civil security.

The product SURAJ is an ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) high-altitude drone devised specially for surveillance operations, facilitating “real-time information to the high command and protecting jawans on the ground.”

Garuda Aerospace has been directed by members from National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in evolving this drone technology.

It has a resilience of 12 hours and can fly at an altitude of 3000 ft.

The drone will carry a versatile payload of high-resolution zoom cameras with thermal imagery and foliage-penetrating lidar sensors with a maximum capacity of 10 kg. This breakthrough technology will capture, process, and transfer photos and videos in real-time, ascertaining that the headquarters and base acquire crucial information prior to planning strategic operations and tenure.

The drone has a huge wing spread of 26 feet, which runs on battery and solar panels on the top, that recharge the batteries in the air, which raises the endurance.

It has a loading capacity of 5 kilograms and is freestanding. Other aspects of this drone technology consist of LIDAR-based camera sensors with 10X zoom, obstacle avoidance, and radar and will essentially operate in the Beyond the Visual Line of Sight (BVLS) segment.

The solar-powered drone is mainly prepared for feasible access for many Indian and global pioneers such as the Indian Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
