In a significant step for green logistics, Flipkart has successfully deployed over 10,000 electric vehicles (EVs) across its delivery fleet, pushing it closer to achieving a fully electric fleet by 2030.

This milestone is part of Flipkart’s pledge to the Climate Group's EV100 initiative and has already improved last-mile delivery efficiency by 20 percent, while also cutting operational costs. The announcement comes ahead of Flipkart’s Sustainability Action Summit 2024, to be held on November 13 at New Delhi’s India Habitat Center.

As per the firm, as  of now, 75 percent of Flipkart's electric fleet is deployed in major cities like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai. In August 2024, the company reported that over 55 percent of grocery deliveries in these Tier-I cities are made by EVs. During the festive season, EVs were also used for over 16 percent of grocery orders in Tier-2+ cities, like Lucknow and Bhubaneswar, supporting a more eco-friendly approach during high-demand times.

Flipkart's Senior Vice President, Hemant Badri, highlighted the positive environmental and operational impacts of this shift, noting that the EV deployment sets a new benchmark in sustainable logistics. Flipkart’s focus on green infrastructure also includes 38 charging hubs set up in collaboration with Adani Group in Tier-2 cities, which are equipped with 190 EV chargers.

Furthermore, Flipkart has rolled out a Last-Mile Aggregator model in Karnataka, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, partnering with EV-focused operators to support its logistics. Head of Sustainability Nishant Gupta shared that Flipkart’s collaborations with EV manufacturers, service providers, and infrastructure companies will help reach its 100% electric logistics goal by 2030. Gupta emphasized that the EV transition aligns with Flipkart’s environmental goals and enhances delivery executives' experience, contributing to cleaner cities and greener practices.

The firm now offers two-wheelers on its platform, allowing customers to purchase bikes and scooters, including electric models, directly from reputed brands. This move broadens Flipkart’s product range to cater to a wider audience, and the platform provides flexible payment options like installments and cash-on-delivery to make purchases more accessible.

With this EV milestone, Flipkart is driving forward its green logistics vision while also diversifying offerings to meet the needs of its customers and contribute to a sustainable e-commerce ecosystem in India.
